Succession Planning/Skills Audit

How well you manage and leverage your intellectual capital will greatly influence your success.   We offer two services in the realm of intellectual capital assessment, namely succession planning and skills audit processes.

Succession Planning

We assist with succession planning for at least two reasons:

  • to identify, develop, and retain future leaders

  • to identify, develop, and retain incumbents who are not likely to move into senior leadership positions but who have technical or business skills that are critical to company success

The first step is to identify future leaders and key incumbents.   The process of identifying your key people has many benefits.  For example, a by-product of this process may be a categorization of employees that facilitates a focused distribution of development resources and also allows a check of the appropriateness of in-place compensation packages (needed to examine retention strategy), such as:

The second step is to employ metrics and follow-up processes to help develop them for continued and future success.

The third step is to take proactive efforts to maintain acceptable employment offers to retain the critical people.   Targeted efforts are needed to keep them.

Beyond succession planning, knowledge management is critical.

Skills Audit

We assist with skills audits to:

  • Improve skills and knowledge by identifying where to focus improvement efforts

  • Reduce training costs, as efforts are more focused
  • Enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of internal employee selection systems
  • Enhance both individual- and organization-level productivity

We follow three steps to conduct a skills audit:

  • Determine skill requirement

  • Audit actual skills
  • Determine training needs by comparing skill levels against position requirements
