About Us

DrSurvey on External Norms

We conduct attitude surveys in order to identify high-priority issues that will be subsequently targeted for action.  External norms are likely to interfere with the success of such efforts.  Why?

  • If your results are better than industry averages, then some managers are content to avoid opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • If the company results are about average, managers typically turn their attention to other issues.  However, expectations raised by the survey process can be dashed when no responses are made.
  • If the company results are below average, managers rationalize, and no changes are championed.

Thus, we suggest that comparing your own results to external norms often interferes with accomplishing needed changes.

However, we advocate internal comparisons, identifying for the most unfavorably perceived issues and organizational areas with the lowest and highest scores.
