Aligning Ideas with Best Practice

Most large firms employ entire departments to monitor the strategic management of their businesses.  Small and medium sized businesses cannot afford this; neither can they afford the time necessary to carry out these functions themselves while fighting fires and addressing customer emergencies.  When strategic planning is done internally, owners often find it difficult to be fully objective.  We offer small to medium-sized organizations the strategic management staff of experts that they could otherwise not afford as an internal department.

Do any of these sound familiar? Can you envision yourself saying the same things?  These are frequently stated reasons from business owners and executives as to why they don't conduct strategic planning.  In fact, these responses illustrate serious misunderstandings of the strategic management process.

We are also assist our clients in large organizations.  Both executives and mid-level managers sometimes get stuck in the rut of "that's the way we've always done it." "It" may no longer be the appropriate way to compete. However, it is hard to tell that you're stuck because of "strategic tunnel vision."

An objective perspective always plays a beneficial role in the development of an effective strategic plan. However, you can't rely solely on outsiders to "fix" the problem. There are two compelling reasons why you (and others in your organization) must be involved in any process.

  • First, no one knows your business better than you do. It would be the pinnacle of conceit for a consultant to come in and present you with a strategic plan without your input. It is impossible for a team of ANY outsiders to come in and fully develop your strategic plan for YOUR organization. However, we have to expertise to facilitate YOU developing such plans. We can lead you through the transition process of taking your organization that has outgrown its current state of being into one that is cutting edge in its understanding of its place in the competitive environment.

  • Second, we will do more than simply facilitate a planning process. We will leave you with procedures in place so that future planning sessions can be conducted without the need for outsiders. In competitive environments that are changing faster than they can be measured, the need for strategic planning is more critical than ever. Organizations must continually evaluate the situation and how their organization fits into the landscape. Therefore, it is imperative that you and your staff play an integral role in formulating strategies.

As a part of the strategic planning process, we also offer numerous methods for improving the decision-making process of the executive team. These methods will increase the breadth and depth of alternative generation, increase the individual understanding of the group's decisions, increase the ownership in the outcome and therefore ease the implementation of the decision. All these benefits will ultimately improve the quality of the decisions.
